Facilitation Workshops at Occupy Boston with C. T. Butler, co-founder of Food Not Bombs

Veteran activist and Food Not Bombs co-founder C. T. Lawrence Butler is teaching three workshop sessions at Occupy Boston, courtesy of Free School University and the Facilitators Working Group. We are honored to have C. T. Butler here to help us, since, when it comes to consensus, he literally wrote the book!

Consensus: So That All Voices May Be Heard

Confused, frustrated, hopeful, or exhausted with consensus so far? Consensus is a process that takes years to master. C. T. Butler and team want to help you of Occupy Boston do what you’re already doing (direct democracy) better. Whether you’ve had formal training or not, come to this workshop to deepen your understanding of what consensus is and is not, its structure and its inherent paradigm shifts. What’s wrong with voting? How can groups handle dominant people? Does consensus have to take so long? Bring your questions to C. T.!

C.T. Lawrence Butler is co-founder of Food Not Bombs. From that leaderless, consensus-based international movement and his activism against war, nuclear power, and oppressions, Butler wrote the definitive work On Conflict and Consensus. It is the only model of consensus specifically designed to interrupt privilege and oppression. His latest book, Consensus for Cities, is designed for groups of up to 100,000. As a front-line activist, Butler has been arrested over fifty times in non-violent direct action.

Occupy Boston: Food for the Revolution!

Food Not Bombs Boston is supporting Occupy Boston!

In the spirit of the recent popular uprisings in the Middle East and Europe, a movement to occupy our cities is sweeping the United States. Starting in NYC at the Occupy Wall Street movement, now there are solidarity occupations in dozens of cities around the country. These occupations are a coming together of the 99% of the population which is oppressed by the outrageously wealthy 1% of our population who control the vast majority of the wealth and governmental action in the US and the world. It is the rise of a popular movement working towards a new world!

There will be a hot meal served at 3pm every day at the Occupy Boston encampment. A Food Working Group has been established for Occupy Boston, if you are interested in getting on the email list for that please go here. Food Not Bombs will be doing a great deal to support these meals, but we will not be cooking all of them ourselves, individuals and other groups are encouraged to work with Food Not Bombs and the Food Working Group to ensure the occupation receives the food and meals it needs to sustain and empower itself!

There is no better time than now to volunteer or donate with Food Not Bombs. We’ve got a very busy, exciting, and fun time ahead of us!

We’ve Moved Our Cooking Location!

As of September 1st 2011, Food Not Bombs Boston has moved its cooking location for all of our meals. We will now be cooking all of our meals (both Friday and Sunday) in Allston, MA. We will also be cleaning at this location and storing all of our equipment there throughout the week. There is a lot of space at the new location and we believe that FNB will benefit greatly from this move. Now is a great time to get involved and help out with Food Not Bombs!

Thanks to everyone who made last weekend a success! We had a great time hanging with SMFA students, waking up the earth, expressing our sex-posi side, and doing our regular meals, despite the rain. So thanks for coming out and helping make it possible!

Huge weekend for Food Not Bombs

We are psyched for this weekend! Please join us this Saturday, May 7th from 12-5 at the Wake Up the Earth festival in Jamaica Plain at the Stonybrook T stop park. We will be feeding the many thousands that attend this lively festival, started in 1979 by activists resisting the construction of 1-95 through what is now the Southwest Corridor bike path (they won!). The festival has lots of music, food, puppets, kids games, bike repair stations, and organization booths. Don’t miss it!

But in case you have to miss it, find us also at Boston’s first Slutwalk! Started in Toronto as a way to confront rape culture, the Slutwalk will start at 12pm on Saturday in Government Center and walk to the Common, followed by workshops. Check it out!

We will ALSO be setting up a table at the SMFA sidewalk sale from 10am-5pm Friday and Saturday. Stop by and chat with us while you peruse awesome artwork and maybe make somebody’s day by buying some of it! Prices start as low as $5, and part of the proceeds go to Food Not Bombs!

Boston Skillshare needs volunteer cooks!

The Boston Skillshare is an annual weekend event full of DIY workshops. Anyone can facilitate a workshop on pretty much anything (though there is a deadline to sign up to facilitate), and it’s always a great time. Some examples of workshops in years past are sprouting, freestyle rapping, lesbian dating 101, the art of the schmooze, and dance dance revolution. In the past FNB has cooked lunch for the Skillshare, and we love helping out this wonderful event! Voluteer to help them cook lunch and you’ll get in free! Sprout Spaghetti Dinner: Not Your Typical Library

This month’s sprout spaghetti dinner is next Wednesday night, January 12. It will be held at sprout‘s studios at 339R Summer St, just outside Davis Square in Somerville. Spaghetti will be prepared by Food Not Bombs, with dinner served at 730PM and performances at 8PM. There is a $10 suggested donation, but all are welcome.

This month’s theme is Not Your Typical Library.

We all know what public libraries are and that they’re in trouble. Even in Somerville, we’re hearing about the funding battles and support campaigns underway. At this month’s sprout spaghetti dinner, we’re going to look at a different set of libraries and library services–not your typical libraries. Maybe they don’t traffic in books; maybe they aren’t run by the government; maybe they’re just bookcases in someone’s living room. Whatever it is that sets these libraries apart, we want to hear their stories and how they handle issues that we traditionally associate with Public Libraries: access, censorship, safety, sharing, curation, and more.

Our performers will include ::

+ personal monologues sharing small-scale libraries in people’s homes and workplaces

The Veggies United, Will Never Be Defeated! (FNB Boston at HONK! 2010)

On Sunday October 10th 2010, Food Not Bombs Boston participated in the HONK! Parade to “Reclaim the Streets for Horns, Bikes and Feet.” The parade featured all the HONK! bands plus Bread & Puppet Theater and many local arts and community organizations. We paraded from Davis Square to Harvard Square starting on Elm Street, then Beech Street onto Massachusetts Ave to Harvard Square.

This year, Food Not Bombs built a float for the parade, which we pulled with our longest bike cart. The 15 foot long float was built up as a “Corporate Food-Industry 18-Wheeler Truck.” The truck was made up to be owned and transporting products for Monsanto (one of the largest food-business corporations at the “growing food” level) and McDonald’s (one of the largest food-business corporations at the “food retail” level).

Thankfully, there were plentiful local, organic Vegetables (played by FNB volunteers and friends) nearby to stop the truck, and send a message to these corporations that their unsustainable practices, and dominance on food production and distribution can not stand. The Vegetables united to blockade the truck, and while it was stopped, encouraged the audience of the parade to step in and spray paint messages on the truck such as, “Food Justice” and “Money for Food, Not Bombs.” By the time the Monsanto & McDonald’s truck reached Harvard Square, the vegetables and audience had succeed in stopping it. The farmer driving the truck resigned from his job working for the corporations, and joined the vegetables and Food Not Bombs volunteers in serving a delicious, healthy, local, vegan meal to the hungry people at the end of the parade.

FNB in Honk! Parade!

We are psyched to announce that Food Not Bombs Boston will be in the Honk! Parade for the second year in a row. There will be a reprise of the beloved veggie costumes this year, plus the addition of an exciting, inflammatory float with built-in direct action, so be sure to come out for the festivities! If you’re not familiar with the Honk! Festival, it’s a must-see (or, must-hear, must-experience, maybe is more appropriate?) brass band festival that takes over Davis square for the weekend of October 8-10th, culminating in a parade from Davis to Harvard on Sunday. We will have our regularly scheduled Sunday meal in Harvard Square. Look forward to seeing you there!
